The only way you'll have fewer of those conversations is to get everyone else to grow facial hair. I'm sure dudes in the 1880s weren't like, "Those are some fine mutton chops sir! Have you ever tried the Ambrose Burnside look?"

But just like with any costume, people want to talk about it. Otherwise why would you be wearing it?

I know women who were drives out of computer science due to sexism. They didn't want to be pioneers with arrows in their backs.

On the other hand, the way you described it, these same people would NOT be uncomfortable to totally leave a field.

The sexism issues were more about not being given projects that were challenging. It's really tough to write a list of rules that will allow me to take women seriously which I think that they should be. We risk losing too much talent when we turn our backs on great programmers who are women.

On the other hand, it seems like you were acting in a way that was appropriate in the past but now is not so anymore.

I wonder if there's some kind of balance between making new people especially women and minorities comfortable and keeping people who made this conference so great comfortable as well?

I'd be the first to not telling any jokes ever again if I risked hurting people's feelings.

On the other hand do we want to live in a world where unfully people make all the rules on humor?

I do part time stand-up and I know that telling jokes is ALWAYS a risk. I take that risk because I love to make people laugh. My biggest fans are women, and my non-white friends also find me to funny. But I fear that white PC police will somehow ban, shun, and attack me with online mobs like so many other people who were just trying to get a laugh.

A dilemma to ponder.

Thank you for writing this and posting it publicly. I think it is helpful to hear the story from all perspectives; I know that I understood your perspective better after having read this. I am glad that your reaction was that of a mature, responsible adult: one willing to acknowledge those places where his own actions may not have been ideal and willing to acknowledge the good will of others, even if some of the decisions made were not what you would have preferred. Obviously, in some of the other well-publicized incidents not everyone behaved this way.

Hi, I will not discuss the "you're the hottest" comment, because I think that Americans have a really bizarre approach to all things sex.

But can I ask you a sincere question? How did it happen that you thought it would be a good idea to light a joint inside a hotel?

Any kind of smoke travels and becomes an issue for everyone in the room. Smoke that's illegal in the state for recreational purposes is even more so. That was a bad decision. What does it mean for people like you? Maybe that you should do more thinking and leave your stash in your hotel room if not at home.

Smoking and inebriation at a technical conference aren't cool. But neither is having a multi-page code of conduct written by feminists and enforced by conference goons. I think PyCon has jumped the shark.

Sean: Thanks for one of the only balanced responses I've gotten, and the memory check :)

Small clarification, I did say "outside alcohol" in the post, and the conference hotel had (I overheard in casual conversation so could be lacking details) asked the conference to stop that previously.
