This weekend, thanks to my being back in town for a bit, I will be attending the coolest hacker event in the galaxy, SuperHappyDevHouse 8. It’s been a while since I’ve been able to attend and I’ve got a couple projects stored up.

If you’ve got an awesome side project you’ve been postponing for months because you just don’t know how to code up the database side, or a neat little hack you’d like to bang out that you just haven’t found the time for, THIS IS YOUR VENUE. This is not a conference. This is not web 2.0. This is you, your laptop, a net drop and lots of caffeine doing a 12 hour sprint to get that awesome thing done.

The kind of person we’re looking for already knows the things we’d be looking for, every job posting you read on the net looks the same, they want somebody who is smart, has experience in things that will be useful to the project, somebody who is a fast learner, all that. That’s all fine, that’s regular. I want somebody cooler than that.

This is why you want to work at Flock, person cooler than that, and if these things sound really great to you, chances have it you may be a person cooler than that and not even know it yet, that happens quite a bit, I hear.

We have an excellent team. We help each other out, we learn from each other, we argue about things that need arguing about and relax about things that need relaxing about. Most of us started at ground zero with XUL and Mozilla development but now have a great understanding of the deep guts of the whole system, if you are starting at ground zero you will have great teachers to get you up to speed.

Everybody here loves open source, a lot. We submit code to all kinds of projects, hell, some of us are even maintainers on large projects. We read and edit Wikipedia, we go to hackfests, and have done everything from trying to write implementations of vi to writing scripts to SMS us when people say our names on IRC.

The code we write gets seen by thousands of developers and will be seen by thousands and thousands more. People we admire and respect will see what we write and use it to write something worthy of admiration and respect. We write a browser our buddies will use, that our friends will give us bug reports on and feature requests for over drinks. And we have far too many excellent friends to link to here.

In this episode a new plot piece falls into the seen: trophies. Some of our crazy attendees will be leaving this episode with just a little bit more pride and shininess than they entered with.

Additionally, a selection of presentations collectively called Geek Pitch will be making a return appearance and this time they’ll be stealing your girlfriend. Yes, I will be presenting “Using Python to Get Money and Chicks,” sometime during the evening.

Speaking of browsers, did you know I’m making one? So if you know anything groovy about Mozilla hacking or advanced Javascript come show off and prove that you’re hot shit (and I’ll do my best to make you into a hero).

Other than that, I hope to fix the SuperHappyDevHouse site, as it is pretty damn broken all across the board.

It’s a party, it’s a hackfest, it’s SuperHappyDevHouse!

The first SuperHappyDevHouse event is scheduled for May 28th. The premise? Bring together a bunch of developers and designers, sprinkle in food and drinks, stir and see how it all comes out.

You could think of SuperHappyDevHouse as an all-night hackfest. Come work on your personal projects; this is an excuse to do it. Maybe you’ll learn about new technologies or methodoligies. Maybe you’l find people interested in working on that project with you. Maybe you and others will form an idea for something that you could easily prototype together that night. If not, the environment is fun and productive, just what you need to get your work done solo.

The house this thing is hosted at is amazing. With any luck it should bring together some of San Francisco’s finest for an evening that would make any geek proud.
